AVY Instruments is an educational start-up company with the mission to provide the next generation of quantum engineers with hands-on experience in quantum computer hardware.
Quantum computers are poised to revolutionize the world, once they are sufficiently developed. While current university courses on quantum computing focus on teaching theoretical skills, it is hardware skills that the quantum computing industry requires to make the next breakthroughs. Our product is a scalable, full-stack solution that includes a cost-effective, educational, desktop quantum computer, and accompanying software and course material. This allows our customers – universities, high schools and even the corporate world – to implement real-world quantum education in their curricula and professional training, and prepare the next generation of quantum engineers for the demands of the industry. Our solution is inexpensive and plug-and-play, removing the need for the time-intensive development of technical equipment and educational resources. Furthermore, it has been developed at UNSW Sydney, one of the world’s top universities in quantum education and the first university with a dedicated Bachelor of Quantum Engineering, providing confidence to our potential customers. About 30 students have already experienced our product, and this year it will be made available to students from Sydney’s other universities through the program of the Sydney Quantum Academy.
The total cost-of-goods of our hardware is approximately $10K, consisting of off-the-shelf components. The selling price of our full package will initially be $50K and include the perpetual usage rights to the course material and software. Moving forward, the equipment would gain features, and use increasingly custom parts to drive down cost. This will allow us to generate IP, as well as give our existing customers opportunities to purchase hardware and software upgrades, and request customizations. We will utilize our academic channels to obtain initial customers, and thereafter scale to high schools and corporations. The time is right for driving, rather than just following, the coming quantum revolution. Schools, corporations and industry don’t know yet how important this will be to their future. We’re going to teach them.
