Jonathan Chak

UNSW Founders Startup Coach

I started my entrepreneurial career in the early 2000s, utilising my graphic design skills to help SMEs produce printed design works. Riding the wave of the internet boom, I partnered with an IT expert to provide web design/development services to Australian SMEs, and international brands like McDonald’s and Fujitsu - so I have a solid foundation for building websites, online marketing and growth hacking.

Predicting the decline in the web development market, I continued with my entrepreneurial spirit by diving into the eCommerce market. My website, Le Domaine, was quickly nominated as a finalist in the Australian ORIA awards.

I also founded a coffee chain from scratch in Hong Kong, successfully pitched for funding from the Hong Kong government and then sold it for a profit within 12 months. In 2016, I moved back to Australia and started working with a Chinese investor, taking Dailongnet (袋⻰⽹) into a new era of Worldwide Knowledge Distribution with voice-based Q&A.

I have also been part of the startup team at Jobs for NSW, assessed over 500 MVP and Building Partnership grant applications and have helped countless startup founders access government funding.

My recommendations:

READ - The Art of the Deal, Donald Trump and How to win friends and influence people, Dale Carnegie.

LISTEN - Masters of Scale with Reid Hoffman hear from the likes of Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg to learn about the challenges when scaling and going through hyper-growth.

WATCH - Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, a Japanese manga series turned TV drama streamed on Netflix. Is gambling bad? Or is it a skill one can master and use it in our entrepreneur endeavours?
